Cross-platform gaming is the new trend
Tomorrow, the world's largest trade fair and event highlight for interactive games and entertainment, the gamescom, is opening its doors in Cologne, Germany. With the title „celebrate the games“, the visitors are to expect new games, sequels as well als new games consoles.
After 275.000 visitors last year, the organizers have extended the facilities to provide enough space for the exhibitors and the demonstration of their new technologies. While in recent years the focus was set on Augmented Reality and motion control systems like Kinect for Microsoft's Xbox, the future lies in cross-platform gaming. Gamers not only want to play on their PCs or on their console, they want to continue their games on the go. „Mobile and online gaming“ are the keywords for this year's gamescom.

Microsoft has already joined the trend and presented the „Xbox SmartGlass“ several weeks ago. With this system, gamers can use their phone or tablet to enhance their games and entertainment experience on Xbox 360. The app SmartGlass turns a Windows, iOS or Android phone or tablet into another screen for the TV, another controller for a game or into a remote control for the Internet. But Microsoft is not the only company to follow the path of cross-platform gaming. Nintendos Wii U uses a tablet as controller and Apple allows users to stream content from their iPhones and iPads onto their TVs.
Apart from new techonologies, the visitors can look forward to plenty of world, European and German premieres from every segment of the games world, like „World of Warcraft – Mists of Pandaria“ or „Starcraft – Heart of the Swarm“. Electronic Arts is going to present, among others, „FIFA 13“ and „Football Manager 13“, „Need for Speed – Most Wanted“ and „Star Wars: The Old Republic“. The release-list for the gamescom 2012 further includes „Resident Evil 6“, „Lost Planet 3“ and „Metal Gear Solid Snake Revangance“.
