But the Italian, who joined the Dotz driftteam at the beginning of the year, not only convinces with his cheeky nose: he is the reigning King of Europe champion.
"The tire man," he is called. Diego Quaranta followed in 2009 the Italian drifters as a service man. Since then he is dubbed "Il Gommaro”.
The 31-year-old Milanese was late called to drifting, but an all the more compelling talent. In his first season in the Italian championship drift, he crossed the concrete better than his competitors.
With such a talent you can immediately look over the horizon. A very long way in Diego's case. He went to Japan for some time in order to learn the techniques of the D1 drifters. "Drifting has a very deep tradition there," said Diego.
That he has learned his lesson in Japan Diego proved in 2011, when he won the King of Europe-series in a heart-stopping finale against Dotz teamrider Adam Kerenyi.
In 2012, Diego has built a new car: he is the only one in the drift scene with a BMW 1 Series. The E87 with an E46 M3 engine and the Dotz Fast Seven makes about 350hp. Together with Dotz teamrider Marco Blasutta Diego holds high the Italian flags at the European drift tracks.
What else has he got in mind: "At all sportsmanship and competition I want to entertain people," breaking up the traditional drift a bit. "Sometimes I'm just a clown," said Diego, who aims some more podium finishes in 2012 season.
