The combination looked promising – on paper. But what appeared on „Lulu“, the Lou Reed and Metallica-album, which was named after Frank Wedekinds scandalous play, it wasn´t worthwhile.

„Lulu“ was pronounced as a sort of „dream wedding of Rock“, a cooperation of Velvet Underground-legend Lou Reed and Metallica, who celebrated their 30th founding anniversary these days. ©Anton Corbijn

Reed and Metallica got to know each other at a joint performance at New Yorks Madison Square Garden October 2009. The band was supporting Reed with Velvet Underground-classics „Sweet Jane“ and „White Light/White Heat“ on occasion of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame´s 25th anniversary. ©WiredImage

Metallica-front man James Hetfield seems also not convinced of „Lulu“: „There will be fans that it will be difficult for them to understand, but we can’t stop being Metallica. We can’t stop exploring what we wanna do as an artist. We don’t like limiting ourselves. But we’re not doing it just to mess with the fans; that’s for sure.” ©Anton Corbijn

He finished his statement with a message to the fans and the announcement, that there are better times for Metallica-fans ahead: „If they don’t like it, wait until the next record where we’re fully focused on Metallica, which we’re actually writing right now.”
